Which material to choose for your mural: paste-the-wall, pre-pasted, or self-adhesive

Mural de montañas entre la niebla instalado en un dormitorio

When choosing a custom mural, in addition to the design, you have to decide which material you want it printed on. At Tailor Murals, there are three: paste-the-wall paper, pre-pasted, and self-adhesive. All three are printed with the same quality and design; what changes is how it is installed and the price per square meter. This guide will help you decide without overthinking it.

The three materials at a glance

Material Price per m² What you need for installation Who it is for
Paste-the-wall paper €47 Non-woven wallpaper paste, roller, and spatula Those who have wallpapered before or have an installer
Pre-pasted €53 Water and a sponge Those who want a middle ground
Self-adhesive €57 Tape measure, level, utility knife, and spatula Those installing it themselves for the first time

Paste-the-wall paper (€47/m²)

This is the most economical option. The paste is applied to the wall and then each strip is placed. It is the standard option for professional installers and those who have wallpapered before. If it is your first time, it is not impossible, but it requires a bit more practice and time.

Pre-pasted (€53/m²)

The adhesive is already applied to the paper: it is activated with water and then placed. You don't need to buy or mix paste, so it is cleaner than traditional paper without being as straightforward as the self-adhesive option.

Self-adhesive (€57/m²)

This is the easiest to install on your own: there is no paste or water involved; just peel off the backing and stick it on. You save on materials and cleanup, and in exchange, you pay a bit more per square meter.

How much does the price really change?

On a 3 × 2.5 m (7.5 m²) living room wall, the difference between the cheapest and the most convenient is €75: €352.50 with paste-the-wall versus €427.50 with self-adhesive. On a 3 m² headboard, the difference is €30. That is why, rather than focusing on price, it is best to decide based on who is going to install it and how much effort you want to put in.

Before you decide: what your wall is like

  • Smooth or lightly textured wall: all three materials work well.
  • Heavy textured (stipple/popcorn), exposed brick, or rough plaster: it is best to prepare the wall beforehand, regardless of the material.
  • Dark wall: the materials are semi-opaque, so the underlying color may show through. If this is your case, consider a coat of white paint before installing.

Frequently asked questions

Does print quality change depending on the material?

No. The design is printed with the same quality on all three. What changes is the backing and how it is applied.

Can I change the material once the order is placed?

Each mural is printed to order with the material you select, so it is best to decide before paying. If you have any doubts, write to us at info@tailormurals.com and we will help you choose.

Which one do you recommend if I'm installing it myself for the first time?

The self-adhesive: you don't need paste or water, and it requires the fewest tools. You have the step-by-step mural installation guide.

Can I see the color before ordering the whole wall?

Yes. The physical sample pack arrives printed on the same paper and allows you to see the color in your home's lighting.

Calculate your mural

If you already know which material you prefer, all that's left is to measure. Start with the guide to measuring your wall and check how much it would cost in the price guide. Then, choose your design from marble and textures, florals and leaves, tropical and palm trees, or landscapes and mountains.
